Step 1 – L’Étape
Our innovative emergency program provides approximately 10 beds for women at the Patricia Mackenzie Pavilion and 60 beds for men at the Webster Pavilion. Our counselors and staff work one-on-one with each client to establish his needs and find solutions to his/her problems. These may be health-related or aid in obtaining official documents from government agencies such as a health insurance card.
Our program extends to providing training and support to re-enter the job market thus ensuring a stable monthly income for our clients.
This new, free short-term program is meant to serve as a bridge between basic services providing nightly food and shelter while working towards the goal of regaining increased autonomy.
L’Étape has achieved great success having contributed to as many as 300 yearly departures since its inception.
Testimonial
Richard’s wife left him after he began to drink again. After a series of difficult life events he found himself alone, living on the street. With nowhere to go, he turned to the Old Brewery Mission, who offered him a place in the l’Étape program. When asked about the support he receives from the mission, he says: “It’s irreplaceable. There’s not an alternative as all encompassing as here.”
